- Alsace is the fifth-smallest of the 27 regions of France in land area (8,280 km²), and the smallest in metropolitan France. The name "Alsace" derives from the Germanic Ell-sass, meaning "Seated on the Ill", a river in Alsace. The region was historically part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was gradually annexed by France in the 17th century under kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV and made one of the provinces of France.
- Das Elsass ist eine Landschaft im Osten Frankreichs. Es erstreckt sich über den westlichen Teil der Oberrheinischen Tiefebene, reicht jedoch im Nordwesten mit dem Krummen Elsass bis auf das lothringische Plateau. Es grenzt im Norden und Osten an Deutschland und im Süden an die Schweiz. Die französische Verwaltungsregion Elsass (Région Alsace) wurde 1973 geschaffen. Sie setzt sich aus den beiden Départements Bas-Rhin und Haut-Rhin zusammen. Ihre Hauptstadt ist Straßburg. Das Elsass ist die flächenmäßig kleinste Region auf dem französischen Festland und hat rund 1,8 Millionen Einwohner.
